Transcription: Hawaii contributed this bronze statue of Father Damian, who was born Joseph de Voister in Belgium in 1840. He was a missionary to Hawaii in the early 1860s and became an ordained priest there in 1864. Often referred to as the martyr of Molokai, Father Damian spent the last 16 years of his life working to improve conditions on that island leper colony. He died of leprosy in 1889.
